From Boo Buckets to Buyer Due Diligence, What’s Shaping Restaurant Sales

Posted by Robin Gagnon on Nov 3, 2026, 4:03:56 PM

In the Halloween edition of Deals Revealed, We Sell Restaurants hosts Robin Gagnon and Rob Morrison explored what seasonal promotions can teach operators about attracting customers and handling a rush. The episode also featured five restaurants for sale, two recent closings, and practical guidance for buyers, sellers, and franchisors.

What Halloween Taught Restaurants About the Holiday Rush

McDonald’s Made the Boo Bucket Part of the Meal

McDonald’s brought back its Boo Buckets for Halloween with designs featuring Disney Villains such as Ursula, Scar, and Maleficent. The collectible gave families a reason to make a familiar meal part of their holiday plans.

Independent restaurants can build their own traditions around a signature dessert, a family takeout package, or an annual event. As Thanksgiving and December approach, consider which seasonal offering customers would look forward to ordering again and which one your team can prepare consistently during a busy shift.

Raising Cane’s Turned a Takeout Cup Into a Digital Experience

For its 2025 Halloween campaign, Raising Cane’s put a QR code on a glow-in-the-dark cup. Customers could scan it to enter a virtual haunted restaurant, play games, and unlock rewards.

A restaurant can apply the same idea on a smaller scale. A code on a takeout bag could take customers directly to a holiday catering menu, a reservation page, or a loyalty offer. Pick one action you want customers to take, then test the experience on a phone before printing the code.

A Busy Order Screen Can Reveal Where Service Breaks Down

Restaurant technology provider Speedline highlighted how connected ordering, delivery, and inventory tools can help pizza operators manage a Halloween rush. The same challenge comes up any time phone orders, online orders, and delivery tickets reach the kitchen together.

Before the next busy weekend, walk through an order from checkout to pickup. Check that menus and hours are accurate, that each order reaches the kitchen with the right details, and that pickup estimates match what the team can deliver. If orders backed up on Halloween, find out whether the delay happened in the kitchen, at the packing station, or at the pickup counter. That tells you where to make a change before the next rush.

A buyer can keep or convert the concept, subject to the lease and required approvals. The opportunity centers on the existing buildout, equipment, and location. Financial records are excluded from the offering.

Seller Insight | Keep the Restaurant Running Through Closing

Once a restaurant is listed, buyers continue to evaluate how it operates. Reduced hours, deferred repairs, and staffing changes can affect the business a buyer expects to take over. A lender may also request updated financial statements as the transaction progresses.

Keep regular hours, stay current on maintenance, and continue tracking sales, food costs, payroll, and inventory. If a temporary closure, equipment failure, or unusually large catering order affects the numbers, record what happened and tell your restaurant broker early. That gives the buyer and lender context when they review the latest results.

Buyer Insight | Review Current Performance Before Closing

The financials you receive at the start of a transaction give you a baseline. During due diligence, request updated sales and expense records through your restaurant broker and compare recent results with the same period in prior years where possible.

If sales have changed, ask what happened. A seasonal slowdown, a nearby road closure, and fewer operating hours can produce similar numbers while pointing to different operating conditions. Lower payroll also deserves a closer look if you’ll need more people on shift to maintain service.

Coordinate visits through your broker to protect confidentiality. Use the inspection to assess equipment condition and document how agreed repairs will be handled. Before closing, confirm what seller training covers and how you’ll receive vendor information and operating procedures.

Why Franchise Resale Pricing Matters to the Brand

When a franchise location is listed at a price its earnings can’t support, qualified buyers may move on before they reach the franchisor approval stage. That asking price can also influence what other franchisees expect to receive for their locations, even when their earnings, leases, and local markets differ.

Arestaurant resale valuation looks at cash flow, rent, equipment condition, owner involvement, and the remaining lease term. Transfer fees, required remodels, and upcoming equipment upgrades also affect what a buyer can invest. Reviewing those costs early helps the franchisee and franchisor set a price they can explain to buyers and lenders.
